That’s exactly what’s happening here. We are just starting to build out our platforms team, which will use a wide variety of new technologies to support the next generation of our apps. The systems are still small, so this role will be a key player in their evolution. This isn’t simply your next web engineering job; it will present a whole new range of challenges that make your established skills new again.

Along the way, you’ll work next to the kind of people who make startups fun. We make jokes, talk about video games and good beer, and share good food. The workload is heavy, so we hit it hard and manage our time carefully. We’ll be here at 11 o’clock at night if we have to, and we have before, but that’s sure not what we’re aiming for. We’re in the business of smiles and family experiences, and we believe that to succeed, we and our families have to be smiling too.

What we need from you:

• 4+ years of experience as a software engineer, mostly in Java
• Either a CS degree or a few extra years of experience on top of the above
• A strong focus on web-based platforms, both on the server and in the browser
• A thorough grasp of what makes our field challenging, and how to face those challenges successfully. You should have some war stories about server scalability, client-side performance, privacy and security topics, user experience design, cross-browser development, internationalization, and troubleshooting anywhere from the script tag to the database.
• Discipline. You are on the more conservative side when it comes to coding philosophy and intuitively believe that if you take good care of your code, keeping it clean and organized, it will take care of you in return – even if you can’t say exactly when or how. And you’ve enjoyed the dividends that has paid again and again over the years.
• High productivity and initiative. You’ve gotten larger and larger assignments over time and nailed them all. Bosses increasingly rely on you. PMs ask your advice on what’s feasible. There are a lot of things that only you know at your company – not because they’re unintelligible – but simply because you’ve built so much that there hasn’t been time for others to learn about it all.
• Really good communication skills. Getting ideas across to others is easy and smooth for you. Don’t worry; you won’t have to give a speech in front of an auditorium – but you will need to be comfortable regularly showing your work to a few of your teammates and discussing what it does and how it works.
• A sense of fun, a love of games, and a vocal, confident inner child! If the thought of Cookie Monster plowing through a pile of cookies doesn’t make you smile, at least on the inside, perhaps this isn’t a good cultural fit.

What would really set you apart:

• Solid C or C++ experience, even if it was a while ago. You aren’t afraid of pointer math and memory management.
• iOS development experience. You have built an app, even if it was just a side project that never made it to the app store.
• Skill with Linux system administration. You have a favorite distro, can manage installed components, and can set up, monitor, and troubleshoot a web or app server without help.
• Particularly strong Javascript skills. You can discuss the “call” function, and why you’d use it, without looking it up. You ask interview questions about closures as a way of determining if a candidate really knows what they’re doing.
• Experience with most of the components in our technical infrastructure. Our server platform is based on Java 6, Tomcat 7, and Spring 3, load-balanced and using BigCouch as a NoSQL storage engine. Our source code is hosted on Github; our build happens via Maven and Jenkins. Our servers are Linux-based, hosted with a cloud provider, and administered with Ruby and bash. In the browser, we use jQuery and its UI library, and we are cross-browser with a minimum IE version of 8. In our apps, we use Objective-C (of course) on iOS 5+ (4.3 for older apps) and often make use of embedded webviews as a UI layer on top of native code. Client-server communication happens via REST/JSON APIs and is done both from native code and via browser-based Ajax calls.
