1980

Callaway Editions is founded by Nicholas Callaway.

1982
Callaway publishes Alfred Stieglitz: Photographs and Writings, the first book ever produced in 300-line tritone dry-trap offset, and which went on to win the American Book Award and the Carey-Thomas Award.  It becomes only the second photography book to be featured on the cover of The New York Times Book Review in 20 years.

1987
Georgia O’Keeffe: One Hundred Flowers is published by Callaway in association with Alfred Knopf. More than 1 million copies are now in print.

1991
Passage by Irving Penn wins the Prix Nadar in France, setting a new benchmark for visual books with its 11-color printing and 7 simultaneously published co-editions.  It becomes the second Callaway title to be featured on the cover of The New York Times Book Review.

1992
Callaway produces Sex by Madonna, in association with Warner Books, and it becomes the biggest and fastest-selling photographic book in publishing history, with 1.4 million copies sold in 12 weeks.

Callaway publishes Ferrington Guitars, in association with HarperCollins, the first digitally composed art book and the first book to have a CD packaged inside it.

1994
Miss Spider’s Tea Party becomes the decade’s fastest-selling children’s book by a new author, making the character of Miss Spider and artist David Kirk family entertainment sensations.  Kirk’s next installments follow in quick succession—Miss Spider’s Wedding (1995), Miss Spider’s New Car (1997), Miss Spider’s ABC (1998), Little Miss Spider (1999), Little Miss Spider at Sunny Patch School (2000), and Little Miss Spider: A Christmas Wish (2001).  The Miss Spider series has become a modern classic, selling more than 5 million copies in 7 languages. 

1996
Nicholas Callaway and David Kirk form Callaway & Kirk, a family entertainment partnership.

1998
David Kirk illustrates the Holiday Books edition of The New York Times Book Review, previewing his new character, Nova the boy robot.

1999
Callaway & Kirk debuts David Kirk’s Nova’s Ark, using groundbreaking 3-D CGI (computer-generated imagery) to tell the story of Nova the boy robot.  Target selects Nova to host the retailer’s television, direct mail, and in-store toy advertising campaign for the 1999 holiday season.

2003
Callaway & Kirk launches Sunny Patch™, a collection of garden products, home décor, and apparel featuring Miss Spider and her friends, at Target stores nationwide.

David Kirk’s best-selling Miss Spider makes her prime-time television debut on Nickelodeon in an hour-long computer-animated special, “Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Kids.

Callaway publishes The English Roses, Madonna’s first of five children’s books.  The book becomes an instant success, debuting at no. 1 on  The New York Times Book Review Children’s best-seller list.  It stays at the top of the list for 18 weeks. Callaway subsequently publishes Mr. Peabody’s Apples (2003), Yakov and the Seven Thieves (2004), The Adventures of Abdi (2004), and Lotsa de Casha (2005).  Madonna’s children’s books have sold more than 2 million copies in 40 languages in more than 100 countries.

2004
Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends, a 3-D computer-animated show based on the special and featuring Emmy-nominated actress Kristin Davis as the voice of Miss Spider, debuts on Nick Jr. The series, an international co-production between Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana and Absolute Digital in association with Callaway Arts & Entertainment, debuts to the highest ratings for a series premiere in three years, since Bob the Builder in 2001.

2005
Callaway releases Nova the Robot, a new series of books based on David Kirk’s best-selling futuristic fable Nova’s Ark. Titles include a new edition of Nova’s Ark, the Nova’s Ark Book & Toy Set, and Twinkle Twinkle, Little Hedgehog.
